techno.ro: Am auzit niște fete vorbind despre piesa Undercover și ele spuneau că partea vocală te reprezintă într-o relație. Este adevărat?
M.H.: Haha. Nu e adevărat. Am creat doar un scenariu nostim.

techno.ro: Momentan ești în turneu promovând acest album. Care sunt locurile în care de abia aștepți să ajungi să pui muzică?
M.H.: Nu am vrut ca această lansare să aibă parte de un turneu uriaș cum s-a întâmplat în trecut cu Magda. A fost minunat, însă e extenuant să pui fiecare piesă de pe album mai multe nopți la rând. Îmi place să am libertatea să pun ce îmi place fără a fi legat de promovarea unor piese.

techno.ro:  Ce îți oferă cea mai mare satisfacție: să călătorești ca să pui muzică sau munca de studio?
M.H.: Dacă una din cele două îmi lipsește prea mult, încep să intru în panică. Îmi place să le fac pe amândouă, asta îmi dă stabilitate. Îmi place și studioul și pupitrul. Nu cred că aș putea alege momentan.

techno.ro: Care este opinia ta cu privire la starea actuală a scenei? Cum tot mai mulți dj își crează un stil comercial, crezi că oamenii din underground încep să se simtă singuri, cum tot mai puțini sunt lăsați în urmă?
M.H.: Asta înseamnă underground-ul! Există atât de multe cluburi în care se pune minimal tipic încât nu e de mirare că oamenii se plictisesc. Însă e minunat că din această frustrare artiști noi și interesanți creează muzică bună. Casa noastră de discuri (n.r. Items & Things) își propune să-i găsească pe toți aceștia.

techno.ro: Dacă nu ar fi fost muzică, cu ce crezi că te-ai fi ocupat?
M.H.: Nu știu ce să zic. Dacă nu aș avea mâini, picioare și un creier oare ce aș face… nu știu nici asta.

techno.ro: Ce consideri a fi cea mai mare realizare a vieții tale de până acum?
M.H.: Pentru unii ar putea fi lansarea unui album sau a unor piese techno vocale, însă pentru mine este faptul că am avut curajul să părăsesc viața comfortabilă pe care o aveam la Minus și să merg mai departe.

techno.ro: Unde te vezi peste 10 ani?
M.H.: Nici măcar nu știu unde voi fi la anul. Sunt destul de legat de Detroit Techno și Chicago House, genuri care nu și-au pierdut valoarea cu timpul. Pentru mine este cea mai bună muzică, iar dacă o voi putea mixa și produce în următorii zece ani voi fi foarte mulțumit.

techno.ro: What are the things that you are set to do in 2012?
Marc Houle: Besides the new record coming out i want to finish on some of the other music projects I’ve been working on.  Turbo is readying a release for Raid Over Moscow, a synth pop project.  But i also want to release a La Folie album and a 2VM album.  I’m also trying to get some fun things going for people to play with starting with a Marc Houle Remiix mobile app.

techno.ro:  A well-known topic nowadays is your transition from Minus to Items & Things. On a personal level, what does this transition stand for?
M.H.: It stands for me stepping up and taking control of my sound, image and future.  I want to get way more done and to do that i need to make this move.

techno.ro: Your new album „Undercover” will be released in March and we were wondering whether the new sounds featured on it are the sole result of the switch between labels or is it something more than that?
M.H.: Let’s say that without leaving Minus, this album would not have been.  I started working on the album while i was still with them but realized that it probably wouldnt be released which slightly influenced my decision.

techno.ro: What started Undercover?
M.H.: A phone call from Magda asking me to make her a track.  She wanted a modern yet old school feeling track with some fun vocals to play out.  She throws a track challenge at me from time to time when she’s running thin on new material to DJ.  It was lots of fun to make and lead me to do more synth styled party tracks which became the album.

techno.ro: We heard some girls talking about the track Undercover and they were saying that the vocal part expresses the way in which you act in a relationship. Is this true?
M. H.: Haha.  Not really.  It was a fun scenario i came up with.  I share.

techno.ro: You are now touring to promote the new album. Which are the most anticipated places of the tour for you?
M.H.: Yeah this release I didn’t want to do a giant album tour like I did last time with Magda.  It was great and everything but just so draining and I was playing all my album tracks night after night.  I prefer the freedom of playing whatever i want and not being tied to promoting a certain bunch of tracks.

techno.ro: Which gives you the greatest satisfaction: touring as a dj or the studio work?
M.H.: If I go too long without either, i start to freak out and lose it.  It’s such a great balance to be able to do both.  I really love playing live and i really love the studio.  I don’t think i could choose one or the other at the moment.

techno.ro: What do you feel about the current status of the techno scene? As more and more djs are starting to have a more commercial approach to music, do you think that people in the underground scene will start to feel lonely, as too few are left behind?
M.H.: That’s what being underground is all about!  Right now there are so many clubs with DJ’s playing typical „minimal” shuffle tom music that it’s become quite boring for some people.  But the great thing is that there is some really cool new music that is being created out of this frustration by interesting new artists.  Our label is trying to find them all now.

techno.ro: If it wasn`t for the music, what do you think you would be doing right now?
M.H.: Oh god.  I don’t want to think about that.  If i didnt have arms, legs and a brain what would i be doing now.  I dont know that either.

techno.ro: What do you regard as your greatest achievement to this day?
M.H.: Well i suppose to others, the bay of figs and techno vocals tracks are the biggest hits but having the guts to leave my comfortable Minus life to try and move forward is my answer.

techno.ro:  Were do you see yourself and the techno scene  in 10 years time?
M.H.: Wow, I don’t even know where I’ll be next year.  I always feel very strongly about Detroit Techno and Chicago House music and it’s really stood the test of time when other styles have come and gone.  To me its the best music and if i can keep making it and playing it for another 10 years I’ll be very happy.
